The Harris Tweed loom

A weaver’s shed and the Orb mark.

An hour in a home weaver’s shed, and the law that protects the cloth.

About this experience

In the weaver’s shed.

Harris Tweed is the only fabric in the world protected by its own Act of Parliament. Under the Harris Tweed Act 1993verify it must be handwoven by islanders in their homes in the Outer Hebrides, from wool dyed and spun there, and it carries the Orb mark.

Most of it is woven on Lewis, in sheds next to the house, on Hattersley looms worked by foot.

We arrange a visit to a home weaver who is happy to show the loom working and talk about the cloth, the mills and the trade. Afterwards there is time at a mill shop or one of the small tweed workshops on Harris.

It is a rainy-day plan as much as anything, and a good one.
